The Woman at the Well, a soul winner ? part 5

If you have been following the teachings no doubt you have disagreed or at least questioned some points I have made. Remember, as I said, I can take the same limited text and prove many positive aspects in opposition to all the negative aspects that have been traditionally taught about this woman. Before reading these posts did you ever consider the virtues that this woman possessed ? Were you influenced by the traditional teaching that this woman was an adulteress ? Were you content and satisfied that the traditional teachings painted this woman as immoral, socially unacceptable, a woman of ill repute and never questioned any of these ? If so, you have a hard time accepting this totally opposite teaching presented herein. I understand your position, its hard to break tradition. Yet when tradition does not line up with the word of God, what do we do ? A verse comes to mind, And if the blind lead the blind both shall fall into the ditch… Matt 15:14. I find it amazing that Jesus said this about the spiritual leaders of His day. When we mature in the faith, the Holy Spirit feeds us with the meat of God’s word. The only prerequisite is that  we must hunger and thirst for it. God’s word takes precedent over tradition.

For this final part we will look at verses 28 thru 42. The text continues to present amazing facts about this woman. Yet, derogatory remarks presented by tradition continue to surface. Verse 28 reads The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city,. Why did she leave her waterpot ? Do you remember what Jesus said earlier in the text? Verse 14 the water I give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. She had water that no pot could contain. Consider the words of Jesus found in John chapter 7 verse 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,  out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. Notice this next verse in chapter 7 verse 39 But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified. Follow this thought as I connect some verses. Jesus said in verse 14 chapter 4, I can give you living water. In john chapter 7 Jesus said people who believe on me this living water shall flow out of them like a river. The scriptures tell us in the following verse this He spake of was the Holy Ghost. Now consider Acts chapter 1 verse 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem. and in all Judaea, and in Samaria , and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.

Did this woman believe Jesus ? Did she receive the living water ? Did that water flow out of her belly as a river ? Did she possess the power to be a witness ? Look at what she says in verse 29 chapter 4 Come, see a man, which told me all things I ever did: is not this the Christ ? 30 Then they went out of the city and came unto Him. Absolutely amazing !! Just as the scripture says, just as Jesus said, it works !! 30 Then they went !! This woman, by every definition of the word, is an evangelist. Have you ever heard her called an evangelist before ? We will compare her to the disciples of Jesus in just a moment.

I said earlier that the derogatory remarks continue. I skipped some words in verse 28 lets look at them. … and saith to the men. She left her waterpot, went into the city.. and saith to the men. From 40 years ago I can still remember the preacher saying, ” O yea, she went to the men, they all knew her real well, she was familiar with all the men.” The sexual implication this preacher implied is forever burned into my memory. That’s pure evil treasure buried in his heart. Probably put there by traditional seminary teaching, what a shame. I choose to believe different. She was friends with the men as she was friends with the women. This woman never approached a man with sensual thoughts. My position is she did not like sex as I stated before. Can you even relate to a person like this ? The reason most people can’t talk to people of the opposite sex is because they are spoiled and soiled by the ways of the world and their flesh is lustful. Titus 1:15 reads Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure: but even their mind and conscience is defiled. What a tragedy !! Deprived of the blessing of purity by lustful thoughts and missing the fellowship like Jesus and this woman had. She went to the men because there was never a lustful thought. On her part because of her purity on their part because five husbands had told her story. That’s what I choose to believe because I can.

The Bible tells us that just because this woman said, come see a man, is not this the Christ? they went. That’s credibility, another virtue of this woman the Holy Spirit just showed me. Consider this; if this woman would have been immoral, an adulteress, a woman of ill repute, shunned by the other women, would anybody value her opinion ? Would anybody believe her ?

Lets evaluate her evangelistic skills compared to the disciples of Jesus. Lets read the teaching Jesus presented to His disciples in verse 35 Say not ye, There are yet four months and then cometh the harvest ? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields for they are white already to harvest. 36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. 37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth ,and another reapeth. Here’s the tough part verse 38. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men labored, and ye are entered into their labours. Why did the people of Samaria believe on Jesus ? We see that it was not by the testimony of the disciples. Verse 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on Him, for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that I did. Verse 40 tells us a revival broke out at the well that lasted for two days. Verse 41 And many more believed… And the icing on the cake is in verse 42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard Him ourselves and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world. This absolutely blows my mind, I’m sitting here amazed… The chosen twelve, Peter, James and John, Jesus inner circle go into town and did not bring a single soul to Jesus. And this woman, traditionally taught to be a vile, debase, wretch of sin brings the whole town to Jesus. The bible says, he that winneth souls is wise. We are taught that one of the few crowns handed out in heaven is a soul winner’s crown. Will you be in that line in heaven with this woman?

I understand that some of these teachings you will not receive, I accept that. On the other hand, most of it you can not deny. For in doing so, you deny the plain teaching of the word of God. This woman was a soul winner, and if everything else is my opinion, then so be it. Nevertheless, this woman has a place in heaven that we all would, should and could have.

In closing, my hope for you would be that as you mature in your Christian faith you would not follow traditional teaching unless you verify it by the word of God.
